When I met Maria Mar what struck me most
forcefully about Maria was a sense of her absolute authenticity and
deep compassion and empathy, along with her wonderful sense of humor
and uncompromising commitment to truth.
I met Maria at a time when I was wearing myself out doing work that
I found very stimulating but also very compulsive as a feminist
activist running an exciting project... Something inside me was
drying up and getting burned out, to the point that I destroyed my
health.
Maria opened my eyes to the effects on
my life of the various wounds I have received and helped me to see
the set of false beliefs I had evolved in response to them. She
helped me identify and cultivate the inner allies who could support
me in my inner journeying to find and heal old wounds. She gave me
tools I could use with her but that would stay with me when she was
no longer with me.
Since working with
Maria, I have been inspired to create from my gift for
drawing portraits from life, a career that is a marriage
between my political convictions and my creative passion.
I have found something that feels like what I am meant to
be doing: a means of speaking out about social justice
through art.
If you have come across Maria you are
lucky, the world is full of charlatans and
half-baked healers. Maria Mar is the real thing.

There are
people who, like the light of the lighthouse, help through storms,
warn you of reefs. This is the light of the people who have been
through what you have been through, who can support you in finding
the solution - you are not a lone boat! They have sailed, some for
longer than you, and know about the waves. They know about low tides
and high tides. They help you to steer a steady course. They add to
your strength until the high wave comes to carry you along your
chosen course. You understand that the low tide does not signify
failure - it is the prelude to the forthcoming high tide, which
abundantly flows your way.
